Become a Registered Behaviour Technician
The RBT credential, overseen by the Behaviour Analyst Certification Board (BACB), is the entry level certification for anyone delivering behaviour analytic services under the supervision of a BCBA. Therapia’s RBT 40 Hour Certification Training gives you every hour of instruction required for the first step in RBT eligibility. You will join live weekend classes with a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA), then reinforce what you have learned through guided, self paced activities during the week. No sitting through a static video course alone.
Our program is aligned to the BACB 2026 RBT 40 Hour Training Requirements and Curriculum Outline, covering all eight required content areas, Sections A through H, in full.
Why Train With Therapia
- A flexible program schedule. Full topic decks are delivered live, with narration, demonstration, and the chance to ask questions in real time. The matching workbook and quiz for that same content is then completed in your own time across the following week, so learning is reinforced rather than rushed.
- Recorded Sessions. Life happens. If you miss a session, or simply want to revisit a demonstration, the recording is there.
- Skills you can actually use, not just theory. Live time is reserved for the parts that benefit most from a real instructor: discrete trial teaching, naturalistic teaching, prompting and fading, and ethics case discussions. Reading heavy content is delivered through professionally narrated async decks, so live sessions stay interactive.
- A clear, structured path from enrolment to certification eligibility. You always know what is being covered, when, and how it builds toward the next stage, including your individualised competency assessment.
Course Structure
The RBT 40 Hour Certification Training runs across four consecutive weekends, combining live online classes with self paced coursework.
| Total training hours | 40 hours, fully aligned to BACB RBT requirements |
| Format | Hybrid: live Zoom classes plus self paced online work |
| Live sessions | Saturday and Sunday, 10:00am to 12:30pm Melbourne time, 2.5 hours per day |
| Duration | 4 weekends (20 live hours total) |
| Self paced work | Monday to Friday each week, 5 hours per week (20 hours total) |
| Competency assessment | Booked individually after Week 4, not included in the 40 hours |
Each weekend, the full slide deck for that week’s topics is presented live, with narrated instruction and hands on demonstration. Across the following Monday to Friday, you complete the matching workbook activities and quiz for that content at your own pace. From Week 2 onward, each Saturday opens with a short recap of the prior week’s work before new material begins, so nothing gets left behind.
Because participants join from right across Australia, live sessions are timed to work for most states without requiring an early start. A short break is scheduled roughly halfway through each session.
What You Will Cover, Week by Week
Week 1: Foundations, Documentation, and Assessments
Introduction to Applied Behaviour Analysis, preparing for service delivery, assisting with behaviour assessments, and service delivery documentation and reporting.
Week 2: Behaviour Change Interventions, Part 1
Task analysis and chaining, differential reinforcement, stimulus and response prompts, discrimination training, conditioned reinforcers and token economies, discrete trial teaching, and shaping.
Week 3: Behaviour Change Interventions, Part 2
Naturalistic teaching, procedural integrity, antecedent interventions, extinction and punishment, generalisation, self monitoring, and crisis intervention.
Week 4: Data Collection, Ethics, and Certification
Data collection and graphing, ethics and professionalism (including real world case studies), and the practical next steps for obtaining your RBT certification.
Every section of the BACB curriculum outline is covered in full, with hours split evenly between live instruction and self paced practice.
The Competency Assessment
RBT certification requires a separate, individualised competency assessment, conducted one to one with a supervising BCBA or qualified assessor after you complete all four weeks. This is not part of your 40 training hours and is not delivered in a group setting.
Once you have completed all four weeks and passed every module quiz, you will be emailed a link to book your assessment slot. The assessment can be conducted via Zoom or in person and involves direct observation of the RBT task list skills. Your results are documented and provided to you on completion, ready to support your certification application.
