What Is a Registered Behaviour Technician?

A Registered Behaviour Technician, or RBT, is the entry level certification for anyone delivering behaviour analytic services under the supervision of a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst, known as a BCBA. The credential is overseen by the Behaviour Analyst Certification Board, or BACB, and it sets a consistent, evidence based standard for the frontline work that sits underneath every behaviour support plan.

In practice, RBTs are the people who help put a plan into action day to day, always under the supervision of a qualified practitioner. That combination, a trained technician working under clinical oversight, is central to how positive behaviour support is delivered safely and consistently.

Why the RBT Credential Matters

For a support worker, teacher’s aide, or allied health assistant, RBT certification is a way to formalise skills you may already be using informally, and to open the door to more structured roles within ABA and disability services. For providers and schools, having certified RBTs on the team supports consistent, supervised delivery of behaviour support plans, which matters for participant outcomes and for meeting NDIS quality expectations.

For parents and carers, working towards the credential can offer a deeper, more technical understanding of the strategies already being used with their own child, alongside a nationally recognised qualification.

What Therapia’s RBT 40 Hour Certification Training Covers

Therapia’s training gives you every hour of instruction required for RBT eligibility, aligned to the BACB 2026 RBT 40 Hour Training Requirements and Curriculum Outline. All eight required content areas, Sections A through H, are covered in full, across four consecutive weekends.

Week 1, Foundations, Documentation, and Assessments. This week introduces Applied Behaviour Analysis, preparing for service delivery, assisting with behaviour assessments, and service delivery documentation and reporting.

Week 2, Behaviour Change Interventions, Part 1. This week covers task analysis and chaining, differential reinforcement, stimulus and response prompts, discrimination training, conditioned reinforcers and token economies, discrete trial teaching, and shaping.

Week 3, Behaviour Change Interventions, Part 2. This week covers naturalistic teaching, procedural integrity, antecedent interventions, extinction and punishment, generalisation, self monitoring, and crisis intervention.

Week 4, Data Collection, Ethics, and Certification. This week covers data collection and graphing, ethics and professionalism, including real world case studies, and the practical next steps for obtaining RBT certification.

From Week 2 onward, each Saturday opens with a short recap of the prior week’s work before new material begins, so nothing gets left behind.

How the Training Works

The program is hybrid. Each weekend, the full slide deck for that week’s topics is presented live, with narrated instruction and hands on demonstration from a BCBA. Live time is reserved for the parts that benefit most from a real instructor, discrete trial teaching, naturalistic teaching, prompting and fading, and ethics case discussions.

Across the following Monday to Friday, participants complete the matching workbook activities and quiz for that content at their own pace, roughly five hours per week. Reading heavy content is delivered through professionally narrated, self paced decks, so live sessions can stay interactive rather than being used up on static content.

Because participants join from right across Australia, live sessions are timed to work for most states without requiring an early start, and a short break is scheduled roughly halfway through each session. If a class is missed, the recording is available to revisit.

Course Structure

The RBT 40 Hour Certification Training runs across four consecutive weekends, combining live online classes with self paced coursework.

Total training hours 40 hours, fully aligned to BACB RBT requirements
Format Hybrid: live Zoom classes plus self paced online work
Live sessions Saturday and Sunday, 10:00am to 12:30pm Melbourne time, 2.5 hours per day
Duration 4 weekends (20 live hours total)
Self paced work Monday to Friday each week, 5 hours per week (20 hours total)
Competency assessment Booked individually after Week 4, not included in the 40 hours

The Competency Assessment

RBT certification requires a separate, individualised competency assessment, conducted one to one with a supervising BCBA or qualified assessor after all four weeks are complete. This assessment is not part of the 40 training hours and is not delivered in a group setting.

Once a participant has completed all four weeks and passed every module quiz, they are emailed a link to book their assessment slot. The assessment can be conducted via Zoom or in person, and involves direct observation of the RBT task list skills. Results are documented and provided on completion, ready to support the certification application.
